Much like CPDs last album Soul Caddy the Daddies take a fistful of musical styles and genres that have influenced them through the course of their career and scatter them wonderfully over thirteen tracks.
Its been eight years too long since the Cherry Poppin Daddies last album, the aforementioned Soul Caddy. Susquehanna seems very much like a continuation of Soul Caddy but with a totally different flavor. Gone, but not completely is the punk rock sound that reared its ugly head before. Back is the ska sound of old, and Im not talking about the trad-ska sound that most 90s ska bands play now (theres some of that too). Im talking about the skankable horn-heavy stuff that the Mad Caddies used to play. The Daddies still have their swing and they also like to mix it up on Susquehanna with a little bit of flamenco herea little bit of salsa therea touch of cock rock there.
For those out there that used to think or still think that the Cherry Poppin Daddies were nothing more than a swing revival band that disappeared into oblivion, you are seriously mistaken. The Cherry Poppin Daddies were never just a swing band. Zoot Suit Riot was nothing more than a collection of their swing songs. As shocking as it may sound, the Cherry Poppin Daddies are one of the most diverse bands to survive the holocaust that was the Third Wave.
Soul Caddy started it and Susquehanna picks up where it left off and then some. It being the fact that the Cherry Poppin Daddies are much more than just another casualty of the 90s ska revival. They are a band that deserves to be heardagain.
Bottom Line: The Daddies are back with another great album that finds itself on repeat in my media player.
Notable Tracks: Bust Out, Hammerblow, Hi And Lo, Blood Orange Sun, Tom The Lion, Wingtips
