Love Happens was a romantic drama that premiered back in September 2009. It starred Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart and was directed by Brandon Camp. The movie is about an author (Eckhart) who writes a book after his wife dies in a car accident, with a way of dealing with the grief. Another woman comes into his life that helps him get past his wife’s death and move forward.

Christopher Young mainly does horror film scores like Drag Me to Hell, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Hellraiser, and The Grudge. He also does some light-hearted comedies and dramas as well. This score is a bit on the light side even though the subject matter seems depressing at times. This score seems a bit different than what Young usual does. The score is mainly piano and acoustic guitar driven, something you would hear in contemporary romantic comedies and dramas. The music is sort of relaxing and something I could just put on in the background and go about my day.

The title track “Love Happens” starts off the album and contains guitars, some violins, xylophones and just has a basic orchestra sound to it. I actually love the title track and it makes me want to listen to the rest of the album without skipping a track. The same motif pops up here and there throughout the tracks. I like the xylophones in most of the songs. At least I think it’s that instrument. In any event, the score reminds me of American Beauty a little. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I’m sure this music fits in with the movie. I think this is a good example of a score working on it’s own without even being a film score.

Bottom Line: A delightful and peppy score from Christopher Young
Notable Tracks: Love Happens, A World in Three Colors, Josh Within Each Thought
