Coldseed is the new band from Blind Guardian’s Thomen Stauch and Soilwork’s Bjorn Strid. The band is definitely more Soilwork than Blind Guardian. Besides the obvious (same singer), the music is a lot more gutteral and aggressive in a metalcore sense, and avoids the 80s-style theatrical, D&D qualities of Blind Guardian.

The album is hit and miss. As a metalcore album, it’s better than most of the crap out there. As a metal album, it falls short. The band is technically sophisticated enough to be interesting; that is, when they’re not drowning in downkey, chunky guitars and bass and repetitive rhythms. Metal guitar solos are present, but seem to be thrown in as an afterthought, while the rhythm guitars continue their thick, mindless metalcore lumbering.

I like that Coldseed is putting the metal back into metalcore, but it’s not quite textured or talented enough to get my recommendation.

Bottom Line: Musically, more metal than metalcore, but still flat.
