Atonement, the Golden Globe winner by Dario Marianelli reunites him with Director Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice) for this classic adaptation of the best selling British novel. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy star in this romantic drama, taking place during the war era of the 30s and spanning several decades. In the film, Keira Knightley’s younger sister wrongly accuses Knightley’s lover of a crime that he did not commit and changes all their lives forever. Like many of Marianelli’s scores, each film is slightly different but the listener always get a very romantic feel from the scores. I particularly enjoyed the use of a 1930s typewriter integrated with some of the tracks on the album like the opening track “Briony.” You wouldn’t think a typewriter would be pleasant to listen to and blend well with the orchestra but it really fit nice and gives a sense of when the movie takes place.

I also enjoyed Jean Yves-Thibaudet work on Piano and really made the film feel romantic, lush, and at times dark and foreboding. While I didn’t see the film, the score certainly can stand out on its own, but I bet it really will add to the film and movie going experience. The score has certainly peaked my interest in wanting to check out the Golden Globe winner for Best Drama and Best Score.

Bottom Line: Wonderful score by Marianelli once again as it appears Marianelli is really building a great track record with his excellent scores.
Notable Tracks: Briony, Cee You and Tea, The Half Killed, Elegy for Dunkirk, Atonement
