Ah, good ol’ Swedish death metal. The speedy drums, the evilly growly vocals, the melodic guitars, the dramatic, gothy keys. Dark Tranquillity is like Swedish death metal’s color-by-number kit.

What differentiates them, if slightly, are the exceptionally melodic guitars and the good drumming when they get a groove on. But what knocks them back down to just being standard are the silly lyrics and vocals that have zero range. Plus, to my untrained ears, the songs sound awfully similar.

Bottom Line: Proficient but uninspired Swedish metal.
