Until recently, I was under the impression that the acoustic guitar was an instrument reserved for folk singers and hippies. The idea of punk rock being played on an acoustic seemed absurd and contradictory to the whole punk sound. That was before I went to see the Dashboard Confessional show last spring. Chris Carraba blew me away with his emo-acoustic-driven sing-a-longs. With a renewed respect for the acoustic I decided to pick up his latest Cd “The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most”. The Cd is both easy to listen to right away and grows on you with time. Every week I seem to discover a new amazing track. The lyrical content sounds all too familiar to jilted lovers. Its easy to relate to and not too sappy (ala Backstreet Boys). Unfortunately, the Cd tries to capture to the essence of the live show (which can’t be done). Chris’ voice has a raw quality which sounds great live but, does not translate well to Cd. Also, there’s no way to properly capture 500 people singing along with every word. My advice? Buy the Cd, learn the songs and go to the show.
