Dirt Mall plays garagey rock with 70s style riffing. The album starts off well with “Hello Los Angeles,” a raucous punk n’ roll number. The next couple of songs are decent but no great shakes. Then the album dips significantly, with tunes around the 4-minute mark and one giant 9-minute snoozefest stuck in the middle of the album. Only “I’m Not Saying…” stands up with the first track as being worth a second listen.

Simple 4/4 rock n’ roll is surprisingly easy to poorly execute, as Dirt Mall evinces. Even with Bon Scott-ish vocals, good bluesy-rock riffing, and a clear love for AC/DC, the drummer seems asleep, the songs are bereft of hooks, and the already-bland tunes are swamped down by long durations.

That they have a song called “Hopeless Bore” seems ironic, but they do have potential and they’re far from hopeless. They just need to rock out in a way that would make one care.
