On “Blahblahblah,” The Dont’s sic sound exactly like a modern-day Wire with some Talking Heads quirky vocals/lyrics thrown in. The repetitive snappy bounciness immediately reminded me of something off Wire’s “The Ideal Copy,” which is of course awesome.
After that song though, the band becomes more of an off-kilter rock outfit. They’re not terribly eclectic, but they do sometimes throw in funk elements, cool jazz flourishes, and the vocals range from ballady sweet to annoyingly zany to post-punk cathartic.
Unfortunately, off-kilter doesn’t mask the unremarkable, and I found myself skipping through many of the lengthier songs. None of the songs on here held my attention, except “Blahblahblah,” which on second listen got annoying after the 2-minute mark.
Bottom Line: I’ventive execution but bland songwriting.
