Everthus The Deadbeats channel the old timey vaudeville motif that’s been adopted by the White Stripes and Modest Mouse. I don’t know what the band looks like, but I imagine they sport handlebar mustaches and say “Bully!” a lot.
The lead singer has a steady, clipped delivery like a circus barker, and there’s that sinister feel of an after-hours freak show. But the music isn’t too foot-stomp garagey (White Stripes, Modest Mouse), gypsy-punky (Gogol Bordello), or classically, inaccessibly weird (Residents). But it is mired deeply in the quirky/jerky circus-indie theme, with some Wire and, okay, Modest Mouse thrown in, and with bells and whistles (and chimes and organs and some electro).
“Human Paraquat” is as circusy they get, with an actual merry-go-round melody that makes what they’re aiming for way too obvious and takes away from an otherwise cool, jazzy-rhythm-driven song. “She” and “Some Terrys” fare much better.
Overall, the band sounds like they’re trying too hard, but it does have its fun moments. It’s a quirky novelty, and it’s been done before, but Everthus can keep it interesting if they focus on the jazzy songwriting and stay clear of the not-so-subtle carousel tuneage.
Bottom Line: Like a carousel – fun for a very brief amount of time.
