“Emo” has become a three-letter curse word around here (my bad), but Everyone Everywhere reminds us of those halcyon days of wine and roses, back when Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Braid defined the term. Those long begotten days of yore when emo meant melodic, molasses-thick indie rock, played with a swirly, fuzzy-headed thoughtfulness, sung with an introspective, off-key yarl.

This is truly great emo rock, the way it should have been and should be. Smart lyrics, drudgy bass, single-note guitar work mixed with blasts of fuzz, cymbal-heavy and free-form-ish drumming, multilayered production that somehow also conveys rawness, dorky but endearing everyman vocals. A tone that is melodic yet existing just outside the realm of “catchy” traditional songfulness.

This album is a wonderful time capsule of that Midwestern, mid-90s era, when the smart kids graduated from punk and hardcore, survived grunge, and proudly wore glasses. It’s also a sad reminder of how good this genre could have been if it hadn’t been co-opted by mallpunk teens, talentless metal/thrash bands, pedophile popsters, and New Jersey in general.

If you emo kids want something to cry about, it’s that bands like Everyone Everywhere are a rarity in your whiny-ass, screamo world of commercialized bullshit.

Bottom Line: Fuck you, stupid emo kids with your dyed black hair and bad tattoos. Learn your roots.
