If there is one thing that comes to mind when listening to this album is how similar Fake Problems sound to Scotch Greens. Both bands have that cow-punk style. Fake Problems aren’t exactly tied to one genre like Scotch Greens are though. Some have said they sound like Against Me! And I guess I can see that in a way. Maybe in a few songs but not every one. Fake Problems use horns, fiddles and other instruments in their songs as well, which make them stand out from the others.
This is the band’s full-length debut; they already released an EP last November and have gotten rave reviews for that. I’m not really sure what to think of this band just yet. I’m not really a fan of the singer’s vocals and think they get annoying too quickly. The band minus the singing sometimes sounds clunky. I think the band needs more banjos and violins. If you’re gonna have a bluegrass punk sound, might as well ride that out all the way. I don’t really consider this band punk rock and i’m sure they don’t either. I guess that’s one positive thing to say about the band, they aren’t one genre and have a wide range of styles. But as i’m listening to this album, I’m just not liking this that much. Just doesn’t sound the greatest and I think if people are thinking this band is punk, they will be disappointed.
Bottom Line: If you’re expecting Against Me or punk rock, you’ll be disappointed.
