Hailing from Beantown, Far From Finished has nailed down that polished, fun Boston punk sound. With clean guitars, punchy drums, and Dropkick Murphy-like vox, they play impeccably catchy punk that can be considered either aggressive power rock or watered-down street punk.
I really dug this album because, hey, I’m a wimp and I like my punk rock tasting like fluffy cotton candy. And you have to appreciate when something sounds good, regardless of whether it’s too polished or too corny or has “aaah-aaaaaah” background vocals (which FFF employs a lot of).
That said, FFF’s lyrics do give me pause. Lyrics about junkies and the working class and being tough guys on the streets of Boston are incongruent to their clean-cut music and come off as suburban posturing. Lyrics like “I ain’t a fuckin saint / I’m a fuckin bum… I’m a fuckin disaster” would’ve sound tougher if Pat Boone sang them. The song “Watch Your Back” is about as intimidating as a sniffly puppy with a cold.
I also can’t help thinking that they’re the best skapunk band that never was. Between the slightly-gritty/nasal vocals and the feel-good, upbeat sound, they would be complete with horns and an embracing of the whiteboy dorkiness they’re trying so hard to cover with ill-fitting swearing and Rancid-like lyrics.
Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: Roses and Razorblades, Wanna Be A Catastrophe, the Rancidy A New Tune
