Fu Manchu mix up stoner rock and hard rock/metal with a quirky, irreverent SoCal twist, and all in a slow-moving hazy cloud of plodding, fuzzy big riffs.
Without the ever-present slow-riff drone, they could easily be the next big hard rock act on MTV. The songs are chewy, somewhat hard confections of radio-friendly metal, and the vocals are clean, with the right amount of brash edge. But the drone keeps them from being completely accessible – it’s like they’re striving for radio play and yet holding back from totally sucking corporate dick. It’s a tough balance to strike, and they do a commendable job.
And I’m being generous because if this shit wasn’t catchy, there’s no way in hell I’d be listening to 35 minutes of grinding psychrock distortion.
Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: Hung Out To Dry, Didn’t Really Try, a cool cover of The Cars’ Moving In Stereo
