As far as I can tell, Goons of Doom are a British snotty pop-punk band that are signed on a skateboarding company’s label. I’m guessing that there must be some kind of skate connection, because otherwise, there’s really no reason that a band like Goons of Doom should ever be signed.

Essentially, they come off as an immature high school punk band that are probably more about image than musicianship. The production is awful, the songs are terrible, and there’s nothing here that is remotely original. That said, I imagine these guys are a whole lot of fun live; their songs are probably more condusive to a sweaty hole of a club or someone’s basement.

The thing is, as sloppy as these guys are, I’d still prefer to listen to them over most of the punk bands these days. They change things up with every song (sometimes too much), and take enough influence from the Dead Milkmen and Descendents. In that sense, they have a bit of a retro feel. But unfortunately, they seem more like a novelty band than real music. Maybe they are, and I just missed something. If the Goons of Doom actually practiced their instruments and wrote better songs, they could be pretty damn listenable. And that’s a big if.

Bottom Line: Sloppy drunken pop punk that would be better if the band could actually play instruments.
