The Hanks start their debut out with a kickin’, catchy pop punk number that I assumed would lead to some more of the same. Boy was I wrong. The next couple songs only vaguely resembled the fast-paced punk of the first song. Instead it was closer to the emo-rock of Death Cab For Cutie. And even though I hate Death Cab, these guys aren’t too bad. Sprinkles of studio tinkering, horns, and well-written songs show great promise. I think these guys want to break free of the standard pop-punk sound and really make something unique. They’re not there yet some of the songs really lag, or are too soft and corny but their energetic tracks tell me that they can really start putting something special together.
Bottom Line: Poppy, almost punk, but more akin to Death Cab-esque emo/indie, this debut shows some promise in its experimental tracks.
Notable Tracks: The Only Thing Real, Mixtape, Evaporate
