The Spiderwick Chronicles has been the number 1 family movie out now. I think if the CGI looked better in the trailers, I might be interested in going to see it but something tells me I’ll just be disappointed if I see this. Maybe I’ll wait for DVD? Spiderwick Chronicles is about three children finding a field guide to faeries, goblins and other magical creatures. It’s based on the children’s novel of the same name.

James Horner is one of my favorite film composers, who composed some of my all-time favorites like Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, Glory and Willow. The opening track “Writing the Chronicles” sounds very John Williams-ish and not sure why. James Horner has a similar style of composing, and has some signature motifs he uses as well. I’m not sure if he uses any in this score though. I really liked the scored to this though, and it makes me feel like I’m in the fantasy movie. A lot of the songs have sweeping melodies, and sometimes they sound very playful. A lot of the tracks have a lot of energy to them and you can tell a lot is going on the screen. I’m sure if I saw this I could picture what was happening in the movie based on the music on the album. This isn’t Horner’s best work to date, but it’s certainly a great score to listen to!

Bottom Line: Another great score by James Horner!
Notable Tracks: Writing The Chronicles, So Many New Worlds Revealed, The Flight of the Griffin, Coming Home
