Academy Award nominated score from Javier Navarrete and Oscar Nominated Director Guillermo del Toro, join together to bring such a compelling piece of music and story that has many people talking, including the beautiful score by Spain’s Navarrete. Pans Labyrinth is an “adult fairytale,” that takes place in 1944 Spain and from what I hear it’s a haunting and dark story that is interesting and visually stunning. You could say the same thing for the music in the film. Just from listening to the score, you could tell there are some lighter moments but a film that is surrounded by darkness and the music really captures that. Several themes standout like “The Labyrinth” and several “Lullaby” pieces. Throughout the score you can hear the main cue “The Labyrinth” pop up in different places, some light and some dark moments. I like that the record has a great beginning and takes you on this journey throughout the CD, and ends appropriately.

Bottom Line: This is the first time Americans have heard of Javier Navarrete and I don’t think it’s going to be the last. Melodic and dark toned score really shines above many of the film scores out there.
