Bolt was the latest Disney animated movie that wasn’t a Pixar movie.

I wanted to see it just for the cute Hamster in the ball. Bolt is about a stunt dog thats an action star in all the Hollywood movies. Only problem with Bolt is he always thinks he can do super things like he does in the movies. Hes just an ordinary dog. One day he gets accidently shipped to New York City and he has to find his way back to his owner Penny.

I always look forward to John Powell releases. Hes one of my favorite current film composers. He always seems to deliver fun scores. Bolt is the perfect movie for him to composed, so I can see why the filmmakers went with him. The first two tracks are from Miley Cyrus (who voices Penny in the movie) and Jenny Lewis. No way was I listening to Miley and Jenny Lewis. Im not a fan so I quickly skipped over those tracks. The rest is the score and its a short one. It must be less than a half hour long. The music is action-packed and heartfelt at the same time. Something you’d expect from a Disney animated movie. I liked the slower cues than the upbeat ones. But all the music sounds like typical John Powell. Powerful orchestrated score with lots of horns. I like the use of the piano for the slower tracks as well. John Powell fans will enjoy the Bolt score; I just dont think it stands out from his other film scores.

Bottom Line: Decent score by Powell but not his best
Notable Tracks: Where were you on St. Rhinos Day, House on Wheels, Rescuing Penny
