Happy Feet was the popular animated movie featuring a bunch of penguins voiced by Robin Williams and others. The soundtrack for the movie came out in October but the film score by John Powell was only just released in December. Like usual, I’m behind in the game. I still haven’t seen this movie but I believe it comes out on DVD at the end of March. John Powell has been one of my favorite new composers, and he keeps continuing to impress me with his work. Movie after movie, Powell keeps getting a lot of good movies to work on such as this one. Powell’s style of composing for these kind of movies has always been light-hearted and playful; this time the score doesn’t have that as much. There’s still a lot of playful type music in the score, but there’s also great use of choirs, action cues and darker motifs. I thought the opening track “Huddle” sounded right out of a pirate movie. So I was kind of surprised to hear that for a penguin movie. Overall, if you enjoyed the score from the film, you’ll enjoy this John Powell score album.
Bottom Line: Great score by Powell. If you like the other music in the film, get the soundtrack.
