I’m trying not to bother with singer/songwriter albums anymore. I’m getting way too many, dislike most of them, and find it increasingly difficult to describe them in different ways.
I decided to review this one though, because the press kit mentions that Kim Taylor temporarily sang backup for Over the Rhine. Nobody knows this, not even my wife, but I’m secretly an Over the Rhine fan. Okay, not so much an OTR fan, but a fan of their album Eve. I think most of OTR’s ouevre is too Americana, too bland, and then they might’ve gotten religious or something, and then they actually put out a Christmas album. (yeesh) But back in like 1993 or 1994, I somehow had a copy of Eve, and I loved it. This album came out during the great female alternarock boom, and Eve brilliantly stood apart. It was sonically strange and lush, almost goth in a happy, trippy, bubbly way. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the only great album they’ve done, and I’m shocked no one else remembers it.
So it’s because of a 1994 great, obscure album from a lackluster band that leads me to review this. And… it’s very Americana and bland. Oh well.
Bottom Line: Pretty and decent, but no great shakes.
