Now I don’t know much about Quebecois music, but when I was growing up, there was a show on MuchMusic called French Kiss (it might still be on), that showcased French-Canadian music. I’d watch it from time to time, forgetting how much it sucked. I kept forgetting that Celine Dion is from Quebec, and got her start in that same scene.
However, it seems the tides could be turning. The Quebec scene is mostly quite insular with few bands ever finding audiences outside of their home province while still singing in French. But then a shocking thing happened: the Quebecois band Malajube gained buzz and popularity in all over North America. Perhaps this was the door-opener for other bands.
I have no idea how popular Les Breastfeeders are in their native province, but this disc has the right vibe and energy to break beyond the elusive French/English Canada border. Full of catchy garage rock hooks, choruses that you don’t need to understand French to sing along with, and songs short and concise enough to go by before you realize you had no idea what the song was about (I sort of do, but that’s because I have my Grade 9 French).
Hopefully Les Breastfeeders will find a bigger audience; their sound is accessible enough to appease the ears of even the staunchest Frenchie-hater.
Bottom Line: Rockin’ songs by a band who don’t have the decency to sing in English.
Notable Tracks: Chanson Pour Destinee, Et J’Apprendrai Que C’Est L’Hiver, Tuer L’Idole
