Lifeguard Nights is the solo project of the frontman from the South Jersey Seashore Lifeguard Convention Band, one of the most imaginative and underrated indie-pop bands around.
Like most solo albums by frontmen, this is mostly an acoustic thing, and I hate to say it, but it’s a throwaway effort. There is that lightly twisted SJSLCB take on songwriting with strained vox, strange percussion, unconventional sound effects, and so forth, but the bells and whistles don’t hide the fact that the songs are repetitive and boring with lyrics like an afterthought. Acoustic isn’t my thing, but this is still disappointing.
Bottom Line: Dull, uncomfortable acoustic stuff from a usually good band.
