Long gone are the days of the Living End ripping through psychobilly punk tracks at breakneck speeds. Not gone (thankfully) are the days where the Living End flat out rocks your face off.
State Of Emergency wasnt a terrible albumit was just boring. It looked like it was the final straw in the Living Ends punk rock reputation and that they were more than geared towards becoming just another mainstream pop rock band. While their punk sound hasnt resurfaced yet, their guitar-heavy Wolfmother sound almost makes up for it. One could say that they could make a run towards the AC/DC of the 21st century.
The first track on the album, How Do We Know kicks things into high gear right out of the gate. The guitar riff sticks to the inside of your skull in an instant. Moving ahead a few tracks, the title track White Noise brings not only a catchy guitar riff but also great sing-a-long chorus and some very noticeable bass slapping. Moment In The Sun sounds like a track that had been forgotten from the Modern-ARTillery sessions. And believe it or not, the Living End even provides us, the listener with yet another ska-tinged tune with Sum Of Us. Its not as much of a ska song as say Trapped, but you take what you can get.
While the Living End roll on with their rockfest, you cant help but notice that the Living End still want the listener to take notice to their social and political messages. Ring The Alarm points out the fact that religion shouldnt matter when viewing the goodness in a person while Loaded Gun tackles the reality and the consequences of police officers use of deadly force.
Some may think that the hard rock sound on White Noise is a drastic change for the Living End but as a longtime fan of the band, you could see the band progress into that sound. As musicians, you could hear the band getting tighter and more diverse with their sound. White Noise is the amalgamation of their musical progressions. Its a sound that was just meant to be. I never thought that the sound of the Living End shedding their punk rock skin would sound this good.
Bottom Line: A different sound for the Living End, but a sound that fits them perfectly.
