The first song almost killed it for me – a repetitive riff with dual electronic and geeky vocals. But it quickly got much better, and they really shine when they mix melody with the right usage of electronica, bloops/bleeps, and random sonic weirdness. “Something Goes Around” is a great example of experimentalism adding to a song rather than detracting. But on other songs, like “The Love Kills Theory” and “Region of the Worms,” electronic/distorted vocals and aggression make them sound like a second-rate Butthole Surfers.
There are a lot of high points here though. “Something Goes Around,” as I mentioned, is a weird-yet-catchy tune – kind of reminds me of Air. “Found” is an extremely catchy, textured indie-pop song, and “King of Cream” is like Elvis Costello, TMBG, and Air having a pillow fight.
Other songs mix melody and arty electro with varying degrees of success. But there’s a lot here and the songs are so dense and filled with various sounds that I need to give it more listens. But the electro vocals will likely remain a sticking point, as is the feeling you get that they might be trying too hard. But props to them for doing something different without sacrificing good songwriting and appealing melody.
Bottom Line: Imperfect art rock, but many happy surprises.
