Someone should have informed Mink that the garage rock movement came and went about five years ago. They could have hit it big.

With Mink’s self titled release, the band brings an eclectic mix of punk influenced garage rock with a poppy side that’s ready to pull out of that garage. There are a few radio friendly tunes (Talk To Me, Dematerialize) as well as a fair share of harder rock songs with a punk edge (Jodi, Get It Right). With most new “rock” bands nowadays, their path to the top usually includes sappy emo songwriting overtop of lots and lots of migraine-inducing hooks that repeat over and over again. See Sugarcult. Mink does things the old fashioned way…they meld together all of their influences into a sound all of their own. The album doesn’t sound overproduced. In fact, the album has a raw, live feel to it but with better quality than a live album. I could picture Mink playing the songs live while listening to the CD. That sound is hard to capture on a recording and I think that is what makes the album stand out.

Being one who has grown tired of rock bands that look like Poison but sound like a rock version of Dashboard Confessional, I found myself impressed with Mink’s self titled album.

Bottom Line: Think Spacehog meets Buckcherry.
