I get a little scared when the words funk, hip hop, and Germany appear in the same sentence, but this was a nice surprise. There is no cheese here – this is uber-hip funky-funk with Gorillaz-style deep grooves and creativity, without the cheekiness.

This is a cool, retro-modern sound. This is lounge, soul, jazz, hip hop, and samples over a warm bed of mid-tempo, laid-back groovaliciousness. Most attempts at this sound fail miserably, but when it’s good, it’s s-e-x-x-y. And not cheap or sleazy, but the opposite, like a really interesting, space-age urban rockitude. For instance, check out “Baby,” which has a crazy, drugged-out percussiveness that still makes sense. Cool shit.

Bottom Line: Cool shit.
