So when I saw that the liner notes of this CD are written by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers, I was slightly intrigued and very interested. Dulli’s bands have had a good mix of a polished rock sound and emotion. The same can’t be said for New Orleans-based Morning 40 Federation. Their swampy-sounding blues rock is interesting and well-performed, but the sound on record is about as flat as it gets. The vocals, as well, are snotty and better fitting to a snotty pop-punk band. There were some catchy songs and a couple nice funky forays into some different genres, but really didn’t appeal to me. Maybe these guys sound a whole lot more exciting live, but this album is pretty flat and really doesn’t do much for me.
Bottom Line: Lots of genre mixing, but they don’t really do anything too well. Plus the vocals suck.
Notable Tracks: Corkscrew was sort of fun.
