Motorik offers up some listless 80s post-punk, now with 50% more emotional detachment! Bands like Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Wire, and Bauhaus are clear influences, but Motorik does little to broaden the genre outside of incorporating flat-sounding dance punk/death disco.
The repetitive guitarwork and listless female vocals get old quick on most of the album. “Robert Palmer” and “First Rule” are probably the best songs, with driving, dancey rhythm, bubbly bass, and more emotive vox, but even those two tunes feel long and cold.
Thanks to a penchant for moody 80s new wave and soft goth, I’m forgiving of this genre, but unfortunately Motorik feels vacant and canned.
Bottom Line: Not that I’m looking for another Faint clone, but Motorik needs more modern rockitude.
