Mystery of Two lament having to endure the frequent comparisons to Pere Ubu. Maybe they should stop sounding like them, then.
The comparison is strong – they both have jammy musicianship that doesn’t seem to go anywhere and angular, gruff vocals that yarl as if to a different song. But while the music is actually more cohesive and rockin’ than the likes of Pere Ubu or, say, Captain Beefheart, the vocals are less unique. And crappy vocals are crappy vocals unless there’s a unique message or artistic point to it.
Mystery of Two might have been trailblazers in the 70s, but I don’t see the point in having this sound today, unless you’re a crazy homeless person ranting over freeform jazz-rock.
