Thanks to Nouvelle Vague’s huge crossover success, the people behind them have been slapping their name on various compilations, and not always clearly to discern what it is you’re buying.

This CD is presented as Nouvelle Vague’s Coming Home. In small white letters on the bottom of the cover, hardly legible, it says: “Marc Collin From Nouvelle Vague Presents a Fantastic Collection of Outstanding Soundtracks!”

So this is actually a compilation of snippets from movie scores – everything from Last Tango in Paris to Diamonds are Forever to various obscure Italian and French films from the 60s and 70s. Besides their love for new wave film which is referenced in their name, imagery and dreamy soundscapes, Nouvelle Vague has absolutely nothing to do with this set, except that their name is a good way to sell recycled music. (To be fair, Marc Collin contributes an original instrumental track.)

The music here is fluffily good and could be part of any swinger’s space-age bachelor pad. But the confusion perpetrated by Collin or the label or whomever to sell CDs is inexcusable. I should call the Better Business Bureau.

Bottom Line: Marketing ploy sullies nostalgic film score comp.
