I wished John Barry composed Open Range because I can just hear his epic score now in my head but I guess we have to settle on Michael Kamen. For people who don’t know him, he was the composer who collaborated with Metallica for the S&M album. The theme of Open Range is in the title track “Open Range” and it definitely has that rousing old west sound to it and I like it. Some tracks in the beginning of the score/movie contain the theme more because it was more happy in the movie then. The later it gets in the movie and the score, the more it gets darker and intense. The score could have been a lot better but overall the score is decent and fits well with the movie.
Bottom Line: Could have been better but it’s not that bad, some songs I found enjoyable.
Notable Tracks: “Open Range” “Cattle Drive” “Charley Rides Off”
