Hey kids, do you miss At The Drive-In? Because I found a replacement for now. Denver’s The Photo Atlas play that same type of heavy, danceable punk with half shouted, half sung vocals, just without the ‘fros. Okay, so they take their sound from a couple other post-punk bands too, but it really does sound just like ATDI got back together in secret and recorded an album.
Even if their influences are obvious, The Photo Atlas are pretty darn listenable. Really tight musicianship and quick songs, and I really love the drumming on this one; it’s equally frantic and rock-solid.
I’d love to see these guys grow a little bit from touring, and maybe add a bit more instrumentation, like a organ/keyboardist. They have the musical talent and decent songwriting skills to actually make ground in the indie world, and maybe even the punk scene. Either that or the At The Drive-In fanclub.
Bottom Line: They sound like At The Drive-In. But we all miss ATDI, so these guys are a suitable replacement while Mars Volta and Sparta both suck ass.
Notable Tracks: Electric Shock, Light and Noise, She Was A Matador
