Talk about the most obscure band to be on Side One Dummy yet! I had the pleasure of seeing Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band open up for Flogging Molly in the winter and man, they were a lot of fun to see! I’m not sure if they got the crowd going crazy for every show but they certainly did at the Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is a hillbilly, roots blues rock band featuring Reverend Peyton on the gee-tar/vocals, his wife Breezy on washboard, and Reverend’s brother on the drums..or a bunch of buckets.
I knew just by seeing them open for Flogging Molly, it was only a matter of time before I’d see that they signed with Side One Dummy. I haven’t heard their stuff on CD before so I was curious to see if I still like the band. After listening to the album, I definitely still like the band! Of course I have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to this but this will be something I put on my mp3 player. The two songs that stood out during their live show and on this CD were “Mama’s Fried Potatoes” and “Your Cousins On Cops.” I just love the way the songs are put together, and the songs are actually pretty funny to me. Peyton’s finger-sliding guitar playing is really impressive as well. This band is an acquired taste and not everyone will like this album. I thought it was great and one of the better albums I’ve heard this year.
Bottom Line: Excellent and eclectic band that will be either loved or hated.
Notable Tracks: Mama’s Fried Potatoes, Your Cousins On Cops, Walmart Killed The Country Store
