Beautiful score to an amazing film. In the past, I haven’t really liked Thomas Newman stuff because he did a lot of piano work or the scores were really quiet, and I was more into the orchestra scores. This score reminds me a little of Shawshank Redemption but better. Once you see the film, the score sounds even better. The first track and second to last are my favorites. the 1st track “Rock Island, 1931” starts off quite and then goes into a celtic motif that is just great. I wish it was throughout the whole movie but it’s not. Some songs are dark “Finn Mcgovern”, some are playful like “Dirty Money” and others are just downright depressing like “Road To Perdition.” Some tracks sound like Newman’s score American Beauty and I think he meant to use that style because Sam Mendes directed this and AB. There are a few songs on here that appear in the movie, to give a feeling of what time period this film takes place. The absolute last track on here is directly from the movie, which is a great scene and an signifincant one where Michael Sullivan and John Rooney are playing the piano together. Film score lovers should really look into getting this score Thomas Newman. I’ll be looking at Newman’s previous work to see how it compares to this one.
Bottom Line: Yes definitely!
