I’m an unabashed Atom & His Package fan. I’m a sucker for the adorable quirkiness of casio punk, and after learning to love the nasal vocals, I find Atom to be clever, hilarious, and an absolute genius at constructing tasty pop-punky morsels.
Robot Goes Here is VERY similar to Atom. Again, you’ve got a one-man band and his computer, and vocals that are a steep curve to get over. But something is missing here: the fun.
Maybe the problem is that RGH so similar to Atom that you automatically compare them, and RGH therefore seems staler and inferior. There are little quirks to RGH that are turnoffs – the occasional lapses into hardcore singing, the dragging nature of some of the tunes, and a frightening emo quality.
But RGH does differentiate himself by focusing more on an 8bit approach rather than a fuller synth/casio sound. Often that makes the song feel repetitive, but there are moments of good usage, such as on “The Minivan Diaries,” “Better Living Through Nanotechnology,” and an interesting (but not their proclaimed “BEST!”) MIDI-ish cover of “Back In Black.”
Bottom Line: 2nd tier Atom & His Package.
Notable Tracks: The Minivan Diaries
