Scream!Hello automatically lose one star for the exclamation mark in their name. Seriously, one of the biggest crimes in music today, worse than screamo, is the egregious and gratuitous use of punctuation marks in band names. The following shall be forever chastised for their use of band name punctuation: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Panic! At The Disco, Adult., !!! (the worst perpetrator of all?), Therapy?, Loney, Dear, etc. So Scream!Hello are starting off on the wrong side for me.

After pre-judging, I actually listened to the album. Pretty standard emo/mall punk. It’s not terrible, and it’s pretty easy to see how some kids might like it. Maybe it’s because I’m eating discount Christmas candy that may or may not be really stale, but I’m somewhat digging this. No surprises in the sense that it sounds more or less like every other band of the genre, but I like the singer’s voice. Unlike too many emo bands, this dude sounds like a man, not a boy. But of course the lyrics are a bit too much, with obvious metaphors or non sequitirs; like “kicking cans of cracked white sidewalks and open arms, corn farms” or “feel like a half built bridge, hope you have some use for me later” (but don’t worry, they could be MUCH worse).

I’d give Scream!Hello 3 stars if their name didn’t have that exclamation mark, but rules are rules, so if they unpunctuate themselves, and maybe I’ll reconsider.

Bottom Line: Standard emo punk, not too bad. Their name? Terrible.
