Self Made Soul – “The Future Belongs To Us”

Radio emo-pop with some cheesy 80s elements, like breathless, layered vocals and sunny, slow riffing. Kinda like A Flock of Seagulls. Hideous stuff, and somehow even cheesier and less edgy than other emo-pop bands.
But the good thing about them is that because of their lack of edge, I’ll never accidentally hear them while watching Real World/Road Rules Challenge. That is, when I accidentally flip on Real World/Road Rules Challenge and my remote stops working for the next hour. Yeah.
Like, they’re so cheesy that even cheesy emo fans will get lactose intolerance. Even the very lamest emo fan, like someone into Forever the Sickest Kids, would laugh at Self Made Soul’s saccharine sound, including a half-hearted attempt at emocore on “Only The World Will End”.
But, wait a minute… if emo fans hate it, does that mean I should love it? Isn’t the enemy of my enemy my friend? Is it good that it’s so inaccessibly accessible? Does any of this make sense? I’m getting confused.
Anyway, this review sucks, but I’ll say this: If the future belongs to them, as they proclaim on the title track, I will follow the Epoxies and Stop the Future.
Oh, and they get an extra half star because they have pretty hair.
