If you take the vocal sound of GWAR and mix it in with the earlier sound of the Misfits and a touch of Alice Cooper you will get almost an exact picture of what the Serpenteens sound like. I don’t quite think that you can label them as horror punk and you can’t just consider them a rock band. The Serpenteens manage to take all of those elements and combine them to form an evilly delicious concoction.
“Dead Men Walking” has a wonderful mix of musical range and classic Misfits style songwriting. “Death Tripping”, the fastest song on the album, has a Pantera guitar feel to it, “Hell California” is a country/rockabilly campfire horror tale, “Day of the Dead” has the coolest rock guitar/vocal riff on “Dead Men Walking” as well as telling the kick ass story of zombies taking over New York City. ZOMBIES RULE!
The Serpenteens were an all around welcomed surprise. “Dead Men Walking” is a great horror rock album with plenty of variety as well as visually stimulating songwriting and storytelling. There aren’t many good horror punk or horror rock bands left in the world anymore but the Serpenteens are one of the exceptions. “Dead Men Walking” is different, entertaining, musically sound and just plain old bloody fun. Definitely sink your fangs into this one.
Bottom Line: Shockingly good punk-infused horror rock ‘n roll.
Notable Tracks: Day Of the Dead, Hell California, Antennae, X-Ray Eyes!
