Love em or hate em or like em but think they’re incredibly overrated, the Sex Pistols didn’t have much recorded output. So while I normally can’t tolerate major label rehashing of bootlegs, concerts, and needless odds n’ sods, this official re-release of Spunk does serve a purpose.

For one thing, it’s one of the very few Pistols boots that sounds passably good. (I’ve heard a lot of shitty concerts that aren’t even worth it for the Pistol completist let alone the casual fan.) For another, Spunk isn’t just identical outtakes in crappier quality, but versions different enough to be interesting again. And finally, it’s great to hear Glen Matlock on the tunes, who actually gave them a deeper, slower and tighter sound than on their actual release.

Obviously, if you’re sick of the Pistols and their overstated role in punk, this won’t change your mind. But as far as digging through the vaults to capitalize on them, you can’t get much better than Spunk.

Bottom Line: A bootleg worth bringing back.
Notable Tracks: The early versions of No Feelings and Submission
