I think I need to quote the lead singer of one of my favourite bands, the Hold Steady, to help explain why bands like Signal Home exist:

Craig Finn “I was just thinking about this and laughing because we were at the Troubadour in L.A., and there were these kids who were 12 or 13. And they came up and asked if they could watch our sound check because they couldn’t get into the show later. They were fans, and they said they had a band. And I said, “What kind of music are you into?” And two of them were like, “We’re into real rock ‘n’ roll like you guys.” And then the one kid was like, “I’m into emo,” and the other two kids were like, “He’s going through a phase.” “When I asked the kid what emo bands he likes, he was like, “All of them. They’re all really good. I just go on MySpace, and I look under emo. Every band is really good.” I think he thought that was a characteristic of emo– that people who play emo end up being really good. But they had this band and I asked them if they were rock, and they were like, “We want to be, but if you’re not any good it’s easier to be emo or hardcore.”

Curse you, Myspace.

Bottom Line: I give the trend two more years.
