I have never really been a huge Slightly Stoopid fan, but I have been following them off and on throughout the course of their career. While their skankable ska days are long since gone, they have been mixing up their sound with everything from blues, jazz, hip-hop and even some psychedelic Grateful Dead jam noise. The reggae and dub are still prevalent, but the variety of sounds brings a broader range and a larger respect and appreciation for the band.
If I were to use one word to describe Chronchitis, it would be ambient. The overall feel of the album is one of a relaxed state of euphoria. Never is there a moment where you want to get up and slam into groups of sweaty menand that my friend is a good thing.
Songs like 2 AM, Round The World and Ever Really Wanted pronounce in large letters, REGGAE SESSION, while tracks such as Baby I Like It, Ocean and The Otherside take any and all characterizations of the band and toss them out the window like yesterdays used condom. Slighty Stoopid doesnt do things all by themselves either. Fishbones Angelo Moore, G-Love and Gangstars Guru all get in on the psychedelic reggae/rock/dub love fest.
Its been quite some time since Ive been hooked on a Slightly Stoopid album as much as Ive been with Chronchitis. Variety just flat out wins me over. Superior musical craftsmanship also helps out a lot.
Bottom Line: For those who enjoy sitting out in the sun or just chilling on your deck, this album is the perfect soundtrack for just that.
