Many people think Wilco typify indie-twang, but I think Sonny Smith does a great job setting the mold. He’s got that perfectly musty old-timey feel, like a gritty mix of Robert Crumb, young Bob Dylan, and a boxcar hobo.
His delivery is raw and honest, lacking Wilco’s over-instrumentation and Beck’s smug ironic coolness. The only downside is my lack of patience – they’re downtempo to begin with, but the pace slows down considerably midway with tunes ranging 5-8 minutes and long, lazy intros and pauses. A couple of good songs at the end redeem it, but it’s not an easy album to sit through.
Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: Good Folks Bad Folks, I’m So Happy
