If you don’t know who David Newman is, he’s one of the many Newman composers in the film music biz. His father was Alfred Newman, his brother is Thomas Newman (Shawshank Redemption, Road To Perdition), and his cousin is Randy Newman and all of them are extremely talented. Ok enough family history. David Newman has scored such fun films in the past like Galaxy Quest, Ice Age, Tommy Boy, Scoo Doo and The Sandlot. It seems he only does family oriented comedies and you can add this score to his list. The score starts off with a delightfully, playful track that’s the “Main Title.” I haven’t seen the movie yet but I’m sure this score works great with the film. Smash Mouth appear on the soundtrack and cover the Beatles “Getting Better.” It’s a Beatles song right? I remember the song from that TV commercial all the time haha. I guess Mike Myers likes Smash Mouth doing covers for his movies (ie. Shrek “I’m a Believer”). I like Smash Mouth so I don’t mind them being on this soundtrack, and it’s a great cover to boot. Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman (Hairspray) wrote the lyrics for 2 tracks for Mike Myers and those tracks are on here as well. The score has it’s moments but I’m sure once I see the movie I will enjoy the CD more.

Bottom Line: If cartoony, fun scores is what you like, yeah it’s worth checking out.
