So apparently The Spill Canvas are one of those one-guy-is-the-band bands that has been around for a little bit, and this EP is a precursor to a major label full length due later this year. Judging by the first track, Staplegunned, they’ll have no problem selling this – clean, cookie-cutter emotional pop-punk all really for malls and Myspace. Absolutely nothing different from other bands of the ilk, but they’re tight and the dude’s voice isn’t too annoying. And the faster songs work better than the acoustic ballad, which is pretty wussy, but I imagine 14-year-olds eat it up. So I mean, the music’s not for me, but in its own niche, it fits pretty well.
One HUGE problem though. Now I actually do love Fleetwood Mac. There. I said it. But is it really necessary for a punky band to cover Gold Dust Woman? Especially when Hole covered it in a very similar fashion and made it a single a few years ago? What could have motivated the band to cover that of all Fleetwood Mac songs? The other cover on this disc is a cover of Donovan’s Catch The Wind, which is done in a pretty straightforward acoustic manner, and I actually quite like the version.
I’d give this disc more, but the Gold Dust Woman cover ruined it.
Bottom Line: Generic pop-punk tries to diversify with a 2 punk songs, an acoustic ballad, a horrid cover of Fleetwood Mac and a surprisingly nice cover of Donovan.
