Another sweet, harmless pop rock release from Australia’s Popboomerang label. Splurge texture their tunes with synthesizers and pianos, and instead of being pop velveeta they tap into the Simple Minds/New Order style of poppy brood rock.
They’re not as catchy as their 80s influences, but their sound has that same layered-but-smooth feel. “Too Much Is Not Enough” even has a Johnny Marr-like guitar sound (though delegated to the background). The very Blur-esque (Blurry?) “Get Up and Watch TV” is also a high point.
The album does have its dips. The first song repeats “brother” at the end of lines so often that I checked the press kit to see if the singer is Desmond from LOST. There are a couple of bland ballads and the title track is a victim of feeble melodrama. This style of pop, even when good, is toothless enough so I urge pop bands to stay above the line dividing the pleasantly rocking with the sappily dull.
Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: She’s Not The One, Too Much Is Not Enough, Get Up & Watch TV
