So today I received a package of CDs from Bryan to sift through and review. Rather than picking them one by one out of the pile, I figured I’d give them all a listen so that I’d at least have a point of comparison. Well, much to my dismay, almost all of them were absolutely terrible or completely unremarkable. There were very few exceptions.
Thankfully, Static Thought’s debut album In The Trenches showed up. Now I don’t listen to punk too much anymore, but I know when it’s done right, because this album is making me want to go to shows and get fucking smashed. This is the shit that totally got marginalized when bands like Fall Out Boy and Alexisonfire exploded. This is old fashioned, fast, fierce and tight punk fucking rock with a hint of metal. Fantastic old-style hardcore punk vocals and a social conscience.
Almost all the rest of the albums I listened to were either too poppy or really just not that interesting. But here we have an album that will make fans of real fucking punk rock rejoice. If a folk music-loving dude like me can appreciate and even enjoy this, there’s no reason why you, a tattooed punk shouldn’t have the first essential punk record of the year*.
I don’t know if that’s true, seeing as I haven’t really listened to too many other albums. But to be fair, it’s my first essential punk album.
Bottom Line: A kickass old school punk album that is well worth your time.
Notable Tracks: Drug of my Mind, Ignorance of the Youth, Junk Dope and Speed,
