There’s so much mediocrity in the music scene that if something sounds halfway decent, it seems above and beyond. Static Thought’s debut album is incredibly well-produced and polished, and so my first thought was, “Wow, these guys are amazing!”
But then I paid attention to the song structures and songs themselves, and realized that they’re nothing special. In fact, the vocals are gratingly awful and the music is unbearably uninteresting. There’s a lot going on – breakdowns, guitar solos, you name it – and yet nothing is memorable, even while you listen to it.
Reading the press kit now, they mention the recording took a year. I guess you need a year to turn generic punk into something that sounds good. But I see through the facade. Oh yes, Static Thought. You have not pulled the wool over THESE eyes!! I know my punk, and all your great-sounding music can’t fool me!! I shall see you all in HELLL!!!! (By the way, I’m drunk)
Bottom Line: Bad punk that sounds good.
