Singer/songwriter stuff isn’t my forte, but I like Suzy Callahan’s voice. Her voice is sweet and vulnerable and has a natural high range. The lyrics are clever; even when about loneliness, heartbreak, or lack of faith they never stink of self-pity.
The first track threw me off – the surreal, folky lyrics over a mellotron gave me thoughts of hippyish psychedelia. But the rest of the album really struck me. The musical delivery here is minimal with drums used sparingly. When a whole band is used, it has an indie rock feel that is both sparse and vibrantly orchestral – sort of like a lighter Camera Obscura. Very pretty stuff.
Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: Hard On Us, I Smile, I Built A House for Frank Lloyd Wright
