Terrorizer were a late 80s grindcore band, and their only album, 1989’s World Downfall, is considered a grindcore classic that influenced a generation of thrash bands.
17 years later, Terrorizer are back, sort of. The CD features a different singer/growler, and sadly, the guitarist Jesse Pintado died just before the album was released.
Not to speak ill of the dead, but Dark Days Ahead is mediocre. They launch a blistering assault, but I could never get into their style of distortion, which is thick and fuzzy. (Their sound reminds me of those cheapo DeathBox guitar pedals we used to play with at Guitar Center.) And the drumming is disappointing – I’m not big into grindcore, but I know Pete Sandoval was the best thing about Morbid Angel. Unfortunately, that insanely fast, yet crisp and technically precise drumming is absent here. Or maybe it’s there, but buried under the DeathBox.
Oddly enough, I dig the new singer and think he’s the best part of Terrorizer 2.0. Sure, the growls are silly, but you can actually make out the lyrics. He’s definitely more restrained than most.
Bottom Line: For fans of Morbid Angel.
