The Bakesys – “Return of the Planet of the Bakesys”
Album Reviews | Sep 20th, 2009
Record Label: Do the Dog Records
Genre: Ska
The Bakesys were a popular 90s ska group in the UK. Kevin Flowerdew, who runs Do the Dog Records was in this band and played the keys. So I guess I should be careful what I say? No seriously, there’s nothing bad to say about the Bakesys!
The Bakesys played 2-tone influenced ska, and had a similar sound to The Loafers, Madness and The Hotknives. Finny of the popular reggae band Pama International fronted the band as well. Considering that I love all those type of bands, I really dug this live album from the Bakesys. This was recorded in 1994 at the Batschkapp in Frankfurt, Germany. 11 tracks in total, and the quality is decent. You can’t really hear the crowd so that’s fine by me. I always hate that in live albums, I’d rather just hear the band and not people cheering or singing along.
I’m surprised I haven’t heard more music from the Bakesys before, considering they have been on a lot of compilations. Or maybe I just simply forgot? Judging by this live album, these guys were great to see live because every song is skankable, and very bouncy. I love my ska bouncy and upbeat. UK ska fans, you must buy this album!
Bottom Line: Fantastic live album and I’m not just saying that because Kevin Flowerdew is reading this.
